Hi Kevin,

Thanks for bringing this issue to my attention. I have no clue how a lesson that came weekly later ended up on this lesson. I will get fixed immediately.

I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

Todd

Hello Todd,
I'm a new member here and do enjoy your lessons greatly. This recording does not match the subject. We all make mistakes, I hope this is one of mine. “If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes." – John R. Wooden

Best regards,
kevin J. Kilroy

Yes, this party was really held in Asia. You are correct, excessive eye contact in some cultures, including Thailand where this dinner was held, is not acceptable. The group of people I sat with at my table were from America, therefore making eye contact was appropriate. Because of the target market for my lessons, I focus on teaching people how to grow and develop themselves in the U.S.

Please tell me what you find offensive about this statement....When you are the one talking, be sure to share eye contact with each person at the table. This action demonstrates that each person is important to you. It also communicates to them that you understand the importance of including them in the conversation.

I have traveled the world and I have never found anyone who did not enjoy talking about their interests. In fact, showing an interest in people is one of the fastest ways of building rapport. What circles have you found it inappropriate to ask people at their interests?

I look forward to your reply.

Was this party really held in Asia? Excessive eye contact is highly offensive in many cultures. Thinking that people who do not make eye contact don't "undrstand the significance" is equally offensive. Similarly asking personal questions about other guests and their interests can be seen as poor manners in many circles- try to find neutral topics or anecdotes rather than interrogating people.

Still, good point regarding not cutting all the food on your place in advance. I've known many Americans who do this. As well as putting down their knife afterwards and shiftingg their fork yo their other hand before proceeding to eat. Another childish habit to avoid.

Judy, if I were to give advice to dinner hosts, it would be to keep the music down, so conversations could take place. :-) It sure was loud! Congratulations on all your accomplishments. I am proud to be associated with you! Tell Bill, I said hi.
