After the passing of a good friend, I got up the courage to call several old friends whose numbers have been in my phone's contact list for years, yet we've only spoken once or twice since high school (I'm 23). They often answered on the first or second ring, one friend even snuck in the call during work (and he admitted he never takes calls during work!) If I had to leave a message, they called me later the same day.
The thing that got me was that most of the friends I called were people who I considered "cooler than me" in high school... we were friends, but they were definitely more in the in-crowd than I was. To have them answer so quickly and then say "Hey, it was so great hearing from you!" really ended up making MY day too! You might be surprised at the reactions you get just by CALLING an old friend. (A lot of these involved being able to meet up for lunch or coffee, but I live too far away from them now to do that.)

My friend who passed was my inspiration - he was always so careful to keep up with his friends' lives and you knew that he cared about you. Now I'm trying to pass that on, and it's becoming just as much of a gift to me as it seems to be to my friends hearing from me.

Thank you for this article - love it!
Casey

Appreciated your article. Here's another suggestion if interested. As consumers we throw so much food away! Before leaving home, pack a lunch from night before leftovers, or buy an inexpensive lunch from MC or BK for a homeless person. I usually get to $1 cheeseburgers and a drink - total within $3. It will not only brighten their day and fill their stomachs but will touch your soul. I usually tell them "I can't give you money but I can give you a meal" the total look of surprise is priceless.

I think this was nice to read, it actually cheered me up reading about all the ways I can contribute kindness and help to others. I think I might try and see if a classmate from school wants to hang out this weekend, we have a lot of catching up to do and haven't talked to each other in a while and i think they'd love it if I did that.

I am calling a friend as we speak who is a VERY busy young lady just to let her know I love her and miss her.

I would also like to suggest that anyone can drop a quick card in the mail to an elderly relative/family friend who was really good to them as a child. So many elderly folks have little money and access to the outside world and so appreciate the gesture.

Thanks for the article.
Cheryl
