It’s no secret that we’re all about the little things that can positively influence and enrich our lives. One of the secrets of success is maintaining balanced health and overall wellness. When we feel better, we do better.
Our modern lifestyles can make it difficult to achieve this balance day after day. Most of us are programmed to run on overdrive, which can sometimes be a good thing, but over time can take a serious toll on mental and physical health.
When we saw how CBD positively influenced our personal worlds, we knew we wanted everyone to experience these positive changes as well—that’s what led to the creation of Joy Organics. The journey has been something we never could have imagined and we feel compelled to share this joy we’ve found with the world.
What Is CBD?
CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of many chemical compounds found in cannabis. Over the past few years, it has taken the world by storm, becoming one of the most popular supplements to hit the wellness scene pretty much ever.
Most people are familiar with THC, the chemical compound in marijuana that is responsible for that infamous altered state of consciousness that most people associate with cannabis.
CBD does not contain psychoactive properties. In short, CBD doesn’t get you high. It is, however, associated with some serious therapeutic potential.
While CBD was virtually unheard of less than a decade ago, today it’s a household name. Everyone is talking about the positive effects of CBD and its unprecedented capacity to support wellness and a healthy life.
What exactly is CBD, though, and how does it work?
CBD is what’s known as a cannabinoid. To date, there have been more than 100 cannabinoids identified in cannabis, along with some 400 other beneficial chemical compounds.
What makes CBD so promising isn’t necessarily the cannabinoid itself, but instead how it interacts with various receptors found throughout the body. CBD interacts harmoniously with the endocannabinoid system. Present in all mammals, the endocannabinoid system has a substantial effect on several physiological processes in the human body.
Some experts even say that the endocannabinoid system is one of the most important physiological systems that exists.
What Is the Endocannabinoid System?
By 1995, cannabis research had led to the discovery of two cannabinoid receptors that are present in thousands of animal species, humans included. What’s the significance of these receptors that are so abundant throughout the animal kingdom?
Through countless clinical trials and endless hours of research, researchers began to piece together what they’d discovered. These cannabinoid receptors, known as CB1 and CB2, play an integral role in a signaling system that was completely unknown at the time. They looked at the relationship between the endogenous cannabinoids found in the body (anandamide and 2-AG), cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2), and the cannabinoids found in cannabis (THC and CBD).
What they found would forever change the way the world considered cannabis.
They discovered that the endocannabinoid system is fundamental in the body’s goal to maintain homeostasis, or a state of balance maintained by the body’s physiological processes.
When the endocannabinoid system is functioning as it should, we tend to thrive. Stress levels are kept in check, we sleep well, and our immune function is in tip-top shape.
When the endocannabinoid system isn’t functioning properly, we experience the opposite. Stress, anxiety, and trouble sleeping can all be attributed to an endocannabinoid system that is out of whack.
One way to bring the endocannabinoid system back into balance is by introducing cannabinoids to the body. Cannabinoids have the unique ability to support the endocannabinoid system, which is why they have gained so much popularity in recent years.
What Exactly Is CBD Oil?
If you haven’t tried CBD oil for yourself, you probably know someone who has. People everywhere are touting the benefits of CBD oil, but what exactly is it?
CBD oil is extracted from the stems, leaves, and flowers of the cannabis plant. In case you weren’t aware, Cannabis sativa is a plant genus. Hemp and marijuana are subspecies.
One of the biggest differences between the two is the makeup of their chemical compositions—hemp and marijuana have significantly different levels of THC and CBD. Hemp, from which most CBD products are derived, contains very small concentrations of THC. In fact, in order for hemp to be considered legal, it must contain less than 0.3% THC.
CBD oil can be derived from CBD-rich strains of marijuana, but the multitude of CBD products available online and in many retail stores across the country are derived from hemp. The only place you’ll find CBD oil with more than 0.3% THC is in retail and medical marijuana dispensaries in states where marijuana laws have been passed.
5 Commonly Asked Questions About CBD
1. Does CBD Get You High?
One of the biggest concerns many people have about CBD oil is that it will get them high. Here’s the thing: CBD derived from hemp doesn’t contain enough THC to produce any psychoactive effects. CBD by itself doesn’t even influence the brain the way THC does.
THC changes perception because of how it interacts with the CB1 receptors found in the brain. CB1 is the receptor that’s responsible for the euphoric high people experience with THC. CBD doesn’t interact with these receptors in the same way THC does—in fact, CBD is even known to mitigate some of the negative side effects some people experience with THC use.
2. If It Doesn’t Get You High, What Does It Feel Like?
While CBD doesn’t cause a high, it does have some effect on the way many people feel. Most people who take CBD describe it as a subtle feeling of calm alongside increased alertness and mental clarity. Some people describe CBD as making them feel “normal.” Others say that it’s just a subtle shift.
3. Is CBD Safe?
As long as CBD is coming from a legitimate source, it’s considered completely safe. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) released a report that stated, “To date, there is no evidence of public health problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
Notice we mentioned that CBD is safe when it comes from a legitimate source. Until now, the CBD market has been largely unregulated. While there are several companies that can be trusted, there are also quite a few out to cash in on this rapidly-growing industry.
So how do you know who’s legit and who isn’t? Reputable companies will offer consumers all the information they need. This can be done through what’s known as third-party lab testing.
Third-party lab test results let you know if a CBD product is truly what it claims to be. Not only do they tell you just how much CBD is in a product, but they’ll also include the presence of other cannabinoids (such as THC levels), pesticides, herbicides, microbes, or chemical solvents. If a company does not have lab reports available, it’s best to find another company that does.
4. Why Do People Take CBD?
People take CBD for many reasons that are as unique as each individual. Because of the way CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, its application reaches far and wide.
While there simply aren’t enough scientific studies to prove the exact ways in which CBD helps, there are plenty of anecdotal reports of people using CBD for a variety of different reasons. Some of these include stress relief, sleep, workout recovery, and skin health. Others even use CBD for their pets!
Does it work?
Apparently so. CBD is so popular that the industry is expected to grow by 700% in the next few years. We’re talking about a multi-billion-dollar industry here.
Last year on the Dr. Oz Show, Sanjay Gupta commended the power of CBD, saying, “I think there is legitimate medicine here. We’re talking about something that could really help people.”
5. How Is CBD Taken?
There are several ways you can take CBD. The most common form of consumption is what’s known as a tincture. Basically, this is CBD oil that is taken by mouth and swallowed after 60-90 seconds.
CBD gummies are another popular option. They’re just like regular gummies (think Haribo gummy bears), only they’re infused with CBD. CBD also comes in capsules, which are taken just like a regular supplement.
You can find CBD topical creams and salves that are designed to be applied directly to areas of the body where one needs muscle or joint support. CBD has become extremely popular in the athletic community and is supported by several professional athletes.
Vaping CBD is another method of consumption. Vaping CBD is much like using an electronic cigarette, only it contains CBD and not nicotine. This method has become increasingly popular because it offers the most rapid effects.
Can CBD benefit you personally? It’s safe to say it probably can. No, CBD isn’t a miracle cure-all as many people claim, but it can help. If maintaining a balance of body and mind is important to you, we invite you to give CBD a try.
